PCI is a therapeutic procedure to open narrowed (stenotic) arteries of the heart in cases of coronary heart disease caused by the accumulation of cholesterol in the walls of blood vessels. As a result of this cholesterol buildup, blood flow become not smooth and heart function is disrupted. This has potential to cause a heart attack. Therefore, PCI is performed to open the blockage point so that blood flow returns smoothly.
PCI or Percutaneous Coronary Intervention is also known as Coronary Angioplasty. PCI needs to be done for patients who experience blockage or narrowing of the arteries even though they have changed their lifestyle to be healthier, take medication, but heart problems still persist, often feel chest pain and have had a heart attack before. PCI uses several methods to unblock:
- Balloon angioplasty:
a special balloon is inflated in the blocked coronary artery to flatten the plaque and increase blood flow, after that the balloon is deflated and taken out - Stents:
insertion of a stent or heart ring inside the artery after angioplasty to keep the artery open. - Atherectomy:
the blocked artery is cut with a small tool using a catheter
PCI process is done by inserting a catheter that has been equipped with a special balloon and a stent that is directed to the point of occurrence of blockages in the arteries to open the blockages and restore the flow of arteries to the heart.
This procedure is usually performed by an interventional cardiologist. With primary PCI, symptoms of coronary heart disease, such as chest pain (angina), shortness of breath (dyspnea) and Congestive Heart Failure can be reduced and even eliminated.
