Normal Heart Rate Based on Age
We need to understand how the heartbeat of each of us is different. Please note, the heart rate will decrease gradually approaching the adult heart rate.
The normal heart rate per minutes for adults, including older, is 50 and 100 bpm (beats per minute). Meanwhile, athletes who are training have a normal resting heart rate below 60 bpm, sometimes can reach 40 bpm.
Good heart rate is different for each person, and depends on age and the type of physical work being done. The following are approximate heart rate by age:
- Newborn: 100-160 bpm
- 0-5 months baby: 90-150 bpm
- Infants 6-12 months: 80-140 bpm
- Toddlers 1-3 years old: 80-130 bpm
- Toddlers 3-4 years old: 80-120 bpm
- Children 6-10 years old: 70-110 bpm
- Children 11-14 years old: 60-105 bpm
- Teenagers 15 years and above: 60-100 bpm
How to Calculate Heart Rate
To calculate a normal heart rate per minutes, you can use a stopwatch. It is better to calculate heart rate in the morning to get an accurate results.
- Place the tips of the index and middle fingers of your right hand on the side of your left wrist or you can do the opposite, just below the base of your thumb. Or you can place your index and middle finger on the neck of the lower jaw on one side of the throat. Do not use the thumb because it has a light pulse that can count when counting.
- Gently press your finger until you feel the pulse under your finger. You may need to move your finger around it until you really feel the pulse.
- Count the pulse within 15 seconds. Then multiply the result by 4 to get the number of beats per minute. You can count your pulse 3 times. Then, take the average of the three to make sure.
